Sanctioned Events
The PEI Roadrunners sanctions the races that are included in the Hashem’s Variety / PEI Roadrunners Championship Points Series.
Criteria
Age
The PEI Roadrunners strongly recommend following Athletics Canada’s minimum age recommendations published in “Guidelines for the inclusion of Children and Youth in Road Races”. These are:
- 5K: 10 years old
- 8K: 12 years old
- 10K: 14 years old
- 21.1K: 16 years old
- 42.2K: 18 years old
Any “under age” runners will require a parent to sign their registration form & waiver.
Distance and Measurement
- Race must be measured accurately by a GPS device or calibrated wheel (not an odometer from vehicle).
- Distance discrepancy should be no more than 50m per 5km of the race distance.
- A map of the route is required for participants before the race.
Course Location and Permission
- Inside Charlottetown & Summerside:
- Requires the contact and permission of local municipality and police for events happening in the city. This includes completing all required paperwork and documents if requested.
- Outside Charlottetown & Summerside:
- Requires a Permit from The Department of Transportation and Public Works for events happening outside Charlottetown and Summerside, and the filing of the event Summary document within 21 days post-race.
Registration
- Every runner must register manually or electronically before the race.
- A valid waiver form needs to be signed by every participant. PEI Roadrunners waiver can be used.
- Runners under the age of Run Canada’s guidelines for any given distance will require a parent’s approval & signature on the registration form and waiver.
Runner Identification
- All participants need to be wearing a bib with a number. This will help with confirming results, and also help identify any racers in large crowds, someone who may have cheated, short cut or committed a foul against another racer and help motorists realize there is an event happening as they are meeting runners.
Timing
- Timing needs to done by a professional timing company with the use of chip timing or using the PEI Roadrunners race clock and manual timers.
Facilities
- Washroom facilities at start & finish
- Drinking water available
Traffic Control and Course Marshaling
- Must have course marshals at all intersections where traffic may be an issue
Water Stops
- Races that are more than 5km are required to have a water stop during the run and at the start and finish line.
- Water stop is required to be on the same side of the road as runners (runners shouldn’t cross the road to get water).
- Races that are more than 16kms are required to have a Gatorade (or similar electrolyte drink) stop.
First Aid
- All races must have a trained first aid responder present on the day of your event.
Results
- All results should be gathered and displayed as soon as possible after the race. Results should be sent immediately to the PEI Roadrunners so they can be posted on their website.
Fee
- A sanctioning fee of $50 per event is applied to all PEI Roadrunner sanctioned events.
Insurance
- If you do not have your own event insurance, your race director MUST be a PEI Roadrunner member.
Once sanctioned:
- Your race will be included in the Hashem’s Variety / PEI Roadrunners Championship Points Series
- Your event will be covered by the PEI Roadrunner’s Club Liability Insurance (if you don’t have your own)
- Bibs & pins will be supplied
- You may borrow, if available, the PEI RoadRunners equipment (race clock, “Race in Progress” signs, mileage markers & water jugs)
- You will be added to the PEI Roadrunners schedule
- Your results will be published on the PEI Roadrunners website
